Frequently asked questions

What is LUMA?

LUMA. amsterdam is a Dutch brand of sculptural 3D-printed vases, made in Amsterdam and finished by hand with a flame. There are four shapes, SILO, SPIRE, SILK and SORA, each in five matte colours and three heights.

Which shape should I choose: SILO, SPIRE, SILK or SORA?

Start with the spot and the flowers you have in mind. SILO is a ribbed cylinder and the easiest to fill with flowers. SPIRE is a tall spiral, a quiet vertical accent. SILK is a twisted bottle for one or two loose stems. SORA is round with a narrow neck, made for a single flower or a small branch. See all four together.

What are the vases made of?

Plant-based PLA, 3D-printed in thin layers and finished by hand with a flame. Each vase comes with a removable, water-tight PETG insert for fresh flowers.

Is a 3D-printed vase water-tight?

Not always on its own. Water can find its way through the fine seams between the printed layers. That is why every LUMA vase comes with a removable, water-tight PETG insert: it holds the water and the flowers, and the vase itself stays dry. Our Journal explains why printed vases can leak and how the insert works.

Which vase suits which flowers?

Look at height, opening and shape. A bouquet usually looks right at about one and a half to two times the height of the vase. A narrow neck holds a few stems upright on its own, while a wider opening gives a full bouquet room. Which vase for which flowers goes flower by flower.

Can I use dried flowers or pampas?

Yes. Dried flowers, pampas and grasses need no water, so they go straight into the vase, with or without the insert. For tall pampas, choose a tall, stable vase such as a Large or a SPIRE. More in dried flowers and pampas in a vase.

Which sizes and colours are there?

Each shape comes in three heights. SILO, SILK and SORA: 22, 28 and 34 cm. SPIRE: 21, 27 and 33 cm. Every shape comes in white, sand, olive, brown and black, all matte.

Which size should I choose?

Measure your flowers or your spot. A Medium of 28 cm suits most bouquets. Choose a Small of 22 cm for short stems and small spaces, and a Large of 34 cm for branches, pampas and full bouquets. SPIRE is 1 cm shorter in each size. More in which size vase to choose.

Which colour should I choose?

Choose a colour one step away from your wall or furniture. White and sand blend quietly into light interiors, olive brings in green without plants, brown adds warmth and black draws the shape. All five are matte. More in which colour vase to choose.

How do I combine two or three vases?

Let them share one thing, such as their colour or their shape, and vary the height. Place them close together in a loose triangle and leave space around the group. Two vases in one order are 15% off, three or more 25%, taken off in your cart. Ideas in how to combine vases.

Do the vases suit a Japandi interior?

Yes. A Japandi vase is matte, natural in colour and simple in form, and so are LUMA vases. SILO is the calmest shape, SPIRE a vertical accent, SILK comes closest to wabi-sabi and SORA is made for a single stem. More in how to choose and style a Japandi vase.

What do the vases cost?

Small €39, Medium €69 and Large €99, VAT included. Two vases in one order are 15% off, three or more 25%, taken off in your cart.

How do I care for my vase?

Wipe the vase with a soft, damp cloth and keep it below 50°C. Wash the insert by hand in lukewarm water, as it is not dishwasher safe. Materials & care explains why.

Can the vase stand in the sun or near a radiator?

Not in strong heat. PLA starts to soften around 55°C, so keep the vase below 50°C: no radiators, hot cars or sunny windowsills in summer.

How are they made?

Each shape starts as a 3D model. The printer builds the vase in thin layers of plant-based PLA. Then we finish it by hand with a flame, check it and pack it. Made in Amsterdam, in small batches. How a 3D-printed vase is made follows one vase from model to box.
