Silo vases in white, sand, olive, brown and black

A vase as a gift for Sinterklaas, Christmas or a housewarming

A vase is a present that stays in use, with or without flowers in it. If you are unsure, choose a Medium of 28 cm in white or sand: it suits most bouquets and most interiors. Below: how to choose the size, the colour and the shape, what it costs, and the last order dates for pakjesavond and Christmas.

Why a vase works as a gift

A good gift is personal without being a gamble. With a vase there is no size to guess, as there is with clothing, and the other person does not have to share your taste in books or music. Flowers arrive in every home sooner or later, for a birthday, a dinner or a new job, and a good vase is the thing most people never buy for themselves.

A LUMA vase is made to be looked at as much as filled. Its fine spiral ribs catch the light on a shelf or sideboard even when it is empty, so the gift stays out between bouquets instead of going into a cupboard.

Which size to give

Size Height Price Suits Good for
Small 22 cm (SPIRE 21 cm) €39 A few stems, one branch, dried flowers on a shelf or bedside table Sinterklaas, or something small to bring along
Medium 28 cm (SPIRE 27 cm) €69 Most bouquets from the florist or the market The safest choice
Large 34 cm (SPIRE 33 cm) €99 Branches, pampas and full bouquets; holds its own when empty A housewarming, Christmas

If you do not know what usually goes in their vase, our guide to choosing a vase size explains the simple ratio between stem and vase.

Which colour, if you do not know their interior

  • White and sand are the quietest choices. They sit comfortably in light interiors and with almost every flower.
  • Olive brings a little green into a room without being loud, and looks good with wood and plants.
  • Brown is warm, and suits darker wood, autumn branches and dried flowers.
  • Black draws the shape most clearly, especially against a white wall.

All five colours are matte. More on matching colour to walls, wood and flowers in which colour vase to choose.

Which shape suits whom

  • SILO, a ribbed cylinder: the easiest vase to arrange flowers in, for someone who buys a bunch every week.
  • SPIRE, a tall spiral vase: a slender, vertical accent for someone with a corner or a mantelpiece to fill.
  • SILK, a twisted bottle vase: soft lines, for someone who likes one or two loose stems.
  • SORA, a round vase with a narrow neck: for someone who brings home a single flower or a small branch.
