Which size vase: 22, 28 or 34 cm?
Share
Short answer: measure your flowers, or the spot where the vase will stand. A useful rule of thumb is that the bouquet stands one and a half to two times as tall as the vase. For most bouquets a Medium of 28 cm is right. Choose a Small of 22 cm for short stems and a bedside table, and a Large of 34 cm for branches, pampas and full bouquets.
The three vase sizes at a glance
| Size | SILO, SILK, SORA | SPIRE | Price | Bouquet in total, roughly | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 22 cm | 21 cm | €39 | 33 to 44 cm | Short stems, ranunculus, one branch; a bedside table or shelf |
| Medium | 28 cm | 27 cm | €69 | 42 to 56 cm | Most bouquets; a dining table or sideboard |
| Large | 34 cm | 33 cm | €99 | 51 to 68 cm | Branches, pampas, full bouquets; a sideboard or an empty corner |
The ratio between stem and vase
A bouquet looks right when the flowers rise clearly above the rim without overwhelming the vase. One and a half to two times the height of the vase is a common rule of thumb in flower arranging. In practice, a vase of 28 cm suits a bouquet of about 42 to 56 cm in total: stems that rise 14 to 28 cm above the rim.
For tall grasses and pampas you can go further, to two or three times the height of the vase. More on that in dried flowers and pampas in a vase.
Let the spot decide too
- Dining table: keep it low enough to talk over. A Small or Medium.
- Sideboard or cabinet: room for height. A Medium or Large, or two sizes together.
- Bedside table or shelf: a Small, with one stem or a few dried flowers.
- Windowsill: a Small fits most sills, but mind the heat. In summer the sun behind glass can warm a vase above 50°C, and PLA starts to soften around 55°C.
Measuring without a tape measure
Hold the bouquet next to the vase before you cut. The flowers should rise above the rim by half to the full height of the vase. If they stand too tall, cut the stems a little shorter or choose the next size up. If they sink into the vase, choose a smaller size or a fuller bouquet.
Two sizes together
Different heights side by side look natural: a Small and a Medium, or a Medium and a Large. Two vases in one order are 15% off, three or more 25%, taken off in your cart. Ideas in how to combine vases.
